On the sandy beach
in the distance, that's our cottage. Achill
Island, County Mayo, Ireland
Every half term we steel ourselves and head for Achill
Island, County Mayo, to be wind tossed and rained upon. Despite the storms,
we can never get enough of this wild coastline. Every time we
visit, which is very often, we discover something new. This time,
it was going for blackshells – mussels – picked straight
from the rocks. We took them home, boiled them up, and dipped
soda bread in the salty juice.
We stay in my sister-in-law's wonderful modern cottage, right
on the ocean. There’s
nothing between us and America, except a surging sea.
